Ragsdale Residence

Approached by SEND (Southeast Neighborhood Development), Blackline was asked to design a small 1,350 square foot urban infill home on a vacant lot in the Fountain Square neighborhood of Indianapolis. Blackline worked with the homeowners, a well-known local artist and curator and his fiancee, to overcome budgetary constraints and create a unique home which is a true reflection of their personalities.

One important aspect of the design is how the house relates to it’s neighbors. The home embraces the neighborhood with a porch that extends the length of the front facade and two pairs of french doors which allow the living room to open to the street. Dinners with neighbors and friends pour out of the house, onto the porch and into the neighborhood.

To give the small house a big feel, the attic was eliminated in favor of high ceilings which allow for the hanging of large works of art. Simple gallery-like walls and details create a background for the owner’s extensive art collection. Bamboo flooring, fiber-cement siding, and a single-sloped roof with a minimum amount of guttering allow for low-maintenance living. The finish colors and materials are favorites of the owners, and complete the design as a statement about who they are and how much they love their neighborhood.
